Bartending Basics
Bartending gets much easier when you focus on a few fundamentals: accurate measurement, good ice, fresh citrus, sensible technique and a clean workspace.
1. Measure your pours
Use a jigger rather than guessing. Consistent proportions are one of the simplest ways to make the same drink taste right every time.
2. Use enough ice
Ice chills and dilutes a cocktail. Fill the shaker or mixing glass generously rather than using just a few cubes.
3. Fresh citrus matters
For drinks built around lemon or lime juice, fresh juice generally gives a brighter result than bottled cocktail mixers.
4. Learn the core methods
Most drinks are shaken, stirred, built directly in the glass, or occasionally blended or muddled. Learn why each method is used rather than treating them as interchangeable.
5. Taste and stay organized
Set out ingredients before you start, return bottles to their place, keep your tools clean, and pay attention to balance.
